What is the ucsd sunshine for seniors project?
We are so excited to be able to spread some joy during this uncertain time. Before I tell you about the project, I just wanted to share some important information with you. Did you know that by the year 2030, 1 in 4 San Diegans will be age 60 or older? As the number of seniors in our community gets larger, it gets more difficult to ensure that they all have the support they need. In many cases, it can lead to social isolation and loneliness. Unfortunately, isolation is associated with higher risks for a variety of physical and mental conditions including a weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and even death. The worst part is that loneliness is preventable. All it takes are people that are willing and able to listen, interact, and help.
It is essential, especially in the time of COVID-19, to combat the loneliness that many of our seniors may be feeling by providing social support. Although we can not visit at this time, writing a letter or giving them a phone call can also combat this feeling of isolation. A commitment to the care of our elderly population can promote better physical and mental health among our community.
There are currently many programs that you can get involved with! Check out the "GET INVOLVED" page for more information.
